LOS ANGELES, CA (Dec. 4, 2012) – Benny Cassette has found away to mesh rock, Hip-Hop, soul and pop music to form a new sound that transcends any one genre for a musical journey titled “Angel Dust,” featuring the first single and video “Say No to Drugs.” The budding artist’s debut EP, produced by Chuck Inglish, follows the highs and lows of Benny Cassette’s real-life personal relationship with the love of his life. The project takes listeners through the 7 stages of love: Introduction, Bliss, Lust, Addiction, Rejection, Torture and Memories, capturing a story and significant moment in each song.
“I had never gone through this kind of intense relationship before with anyone. We fell in love really fast and really hard that eventually led to a break up. I was inspired to write based on the journey I was going through. My real emotions and experiences are behind each song,” explains Benny. The title “Angel Dust” derives from his idea that once he fell in love, that woman became an idealized version of everything he’d every wanted – thus an “angel.” When that part of the journey ends and the bliss runs out, the angel becomes dust – a memory.
Benny describes each stage and accompanying song as:
Introduction “Shades of Blue” – The stage of infatuation when you get wrapped up into each other’s world and energy. It’s fresh and exciting. Blue was her favorite color and her whole life appeared as calm and cool shades of blue.
Bliss “Girl from Inglewood” – The moment you start to dive in and everything is perfect and amazing. Benny says it’s not easy for a man to fall into a safe bliss and let his guard down so this stage was special.
Lust “Say No to Drugs” – A time when you can get into a space where it becomes so intense that bliss evolves into lust. It’s not necessarily healthy or good for you but you don’t want to stop.
Addiction “Raw Sugar” – A deep stage where you can’t live without the other person. As much as someone can crush your heart, you still yearn for that person’s companionship.
Rejection “Empires” – After you’ve built an empire with that significant other that you thought would work, but the universe rejects your fairytale plan, wants and desires, and sends you on a journey you were meant to experience. This stage leaves you completely alone.
Torture “Ferngully” – The moment when everything has fallen apart and you’re left wondering what the other person is doing. Questions like “who is she with, will I ever talk to her again, has she met someone else?” torture your mind.
Memories “X-Mas Sweater” – The final stage where you’re left with photos, songs and “angel dust” reminding you of the good times you once shared with the love of your life, and the hope of creating new memories with that person.
Benny Cassette’s gut-wrenching delivery on “Angel Dust” mirrors that of a “Coachella Pop” kind of sound that still has an edge but could be on the radio too. Benny’s unique vibe was birthed from his mash-up of living in an Italian household, growing up in a Latino neighborhood and attending Hip-Hop influenced schools. “I’ve never been this honest about anything I’ve ever written. [This project] taught me to never censor anything I feel and to write about whatever comes to me without being afraid to be vulnerable,” says Benny. “I want people who listen to my music to feel there’s light at the end of the tunnel; that they’re not alone. There’s someone else out there who ‘s experiencing the same heartbreak and isolation and they understand.”
Benny plans to release a second single and video from “Angel Dust” in January. He is also in the studio working on a debut album to be released in early 2013.
